The VP of R&D is responsible for the leadership, strategic direction and development of the Spark & Digital Orthodontic product development groups. This will include hardware, software, firmware, and system engineering.  As a member of the Spark leadership team, candidates should be experienced in translating company strategy into operational strategy and set and achieve organization goals that help deliver on that strategy.  This means identifying and leading the rollout of strategic initiatives to ensure year-over-year success in-line with the overall company objectives (GM%, Growth, and Working Capital) and strategic plan. 

The person in this position is first and foremost a leader of people.  S/He must have the vision, communication ability, technical drive, persistence, and team building skills necessary to maintain and enhance product development excellence within the organization.  The person in this position is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the R&D functions are state-of-the-art from both a technical and process perspective.  The VP of R&D must have an ability and passion for continuous process improvement and will also have a creative spark to consistently interject new ideas that impact success.
The candidate must be able to hire, develop, coach and motivate capable team members and possess the ability to build cohesive teams across geographic lines and functions.  S/He must be able to lead team members, allowing them the scope of freedom necessary for them to excel in their positions while at the same time driving process improvements. 


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Oversee organizational development, hiring, leadership, staff development, and capacity planning of all hardware, software, firmware, and systems engineering.

• Ensure excellent performance against product roadmap for R&D organization.
• Engage with global R&D team in a way that promotes a strong link to the company’s vision and high job satisfaction to motivate the team to perform its best.
• Develop, oversee, and manage budgets for all R&D groups.
• Participate in the development of corporate project objectives and strategic planning and ensure execution.
• Drive innovation into the product development lifecycle; look for areas to drive change and innovate across process, product, and programs.
• Provide technical leadership to develop cutting-edge solutions, proactively bringing new ideas, technologies, and methodologies to the team. Ensure the optimal application of technology and engineering resources to meet product development and quality requirements.
• Detail oriented and prepared to be “hands on” when necessary for problem solving, brainstorming, design reviews.
• Remove barriers, streamline the infrastructure, open to new opportunities at all levels, looks for bottom line results.
• Hire, mentor and coach R&D management team in multiple global locations.
• Ensure clarity of direction and management metrics are in place and tracked for R&D organization.  Oversee the creation, tracking and maintenance of departmental and relevant KPIs.
• Oversee the creation of all departmental budgets and manage to them taking into account the current revenue.
• Facilitate and participate in ideation towards new products and strategies.  Take ownership for relevant strategies and specific tactics.
• Oversee the development and documentation of both intra- and interdepartmental processes.  Collaborate with Operations, Commercial and other functional groups to drive process improvements and launch schedules.
• Responsible for successfully delivering product to market and accelerating time to market.
• Lead and/or assist in establishing external technology partnerships and participating in M&A activities

• Education:  Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree in relevant field preferred.
• Experience:  10+ years of R&D/engineering leadership required.
• Experience across hardware automation, software, firmware, and systems engineering.
• Experience in cradle to grave product development/engineering of commercially viable products.
• Experience of successful product launches to a broad, global customer base.
• Experience in bringing IoT solutions to market preferred.
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge in product development best practices (i.e., DFM, DOE, DFMEA, Lean PD, agile methods, etc.).
