Metrex Sr. Manufacturing Engineer - Converting & Packing (Romulus, MI)

The Metrex Sr. Manufacturing Engineer is the primary subject matter expert for converting and packing non-woven or paper substrates of various materials through processes from unwinding to full packaged materials. This role is responsible for the development and deployment of converting and packing asset reliability strategy. Integrating technical support, product development, quality systems and predictive maintenance programs with a focus on improving productivity and operating efficiencies. This role will assist and lead the collaborative efforts with OEM Vendors, plant/engineering manager, and quality teams to achieve the desired products. As the technical leader, the converting & packaging engineer will be called up to lead short- and long-term capital projects ranging from asset management to environmental and safety programs. This role is also responsible for collaborating with the plant to assist with operations, outages, maintenance, technical analysis, safety, and engineering and operations capability development.





Technical/Operational Engineering:

  • Serves as principle internal subject matter expert to support operations in identifying and resolving converting and packaging of non-woven or paper asset operations as well as process related opportunities leveraging VAVE (Value Engineering & Root Cause Analysis).  Leverage and improve existing equipment to gain throughput from processes from converting equipment of non-woven to finished good.
  • Lead the development and execution of assets reliability & safety programs incorporating capital prioritization and predictive maintenance programs for converting asset operations. (i.e. Autonomous Maintenance & Predictive Maintenance).
  • Research, identify and develop projects and process improvement areas to support improvement in product conversion and packaging development; collaborate across the resources to gain alignment.
  • Develop & execution of project plans supporting the 1+year strategy for converting assets inclusive of equipment specifications and layout to maximize potential output.
  • Serve as principle contact to OEM, outside contractors and service providers, providing leadership and direction delivering projects and services within budget and time constraints.


Continuous Improvement:


·       Champion a culture of continuous improvement through Envista Business Systems tool box.

·       Identify opportunities to improve overall performance through development and deployment of maintenance standards; process engineering, machine design/layout with emphasis on supporting consistent manufacturing capabilities amongst all shifts and equipment.

·       Develop, execute and maintain product quality systems and process documentation throughout manufacturing footprint delivering consistent products with a commitment to meeting and exceeding customer expectations.

·       Leverage engineering technical expertise through collaboration with sales & marketing to identify market opportunities by providing technical insights into asset capabilities or cost savings opportunities.


Engineering & Production Capability Building:

  • Drive a culture of technical collaboration throughout Converting G3 Operators, Line Leads, Supervisors, Process Engineers, and Business Unit Leaders.  Train to learn atmosphere within shortened duration.
  • Enable technical and quality sustainment plan by promoting developing and transferring knowledge across work groups.
  • Provide technical consultative manufacturing improvements in collaboration with Manufacturing, Quality Engineering and R&D on converting assets or changes within processes.
  • Manages a calibration system including scheduling, implementation, and training of qualified personnel to perform calibrations to comply with ISO and FDA standards.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical or Packaging Engineering.  

  • 8+ years of converting experience in non-wovens OR 12+ years of converting expertise in non-woven or paper from on the floor work experience to maintenance of equipment.

  • 8 - 10+ years of progressive responsibility in converting & packaging in non-woven or paper process engineering and manufacturing operations required.

  • 5+ years of budgetary responsibilities with Capital Project Management.



  • Master’s in Engineering preferred.

  • AutoCAD experience preferred.

  • Certifications in Project Management, TPM or Continuous Improvement preferred.

  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal development through continuing education and influencing others.

  • Highly adept communicating and collaborating skills across multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.

  • Confident and proficient in navigating in an automated environment.

  • Proficient in MS-Office Suite and multiple business intelligence databases.
