Job Description:
The Tool Maker IV has advanced and specialized expertise in Class A mold making. Works with little to no direction to hold tolerances required for high precision, high quality medical device molds (+/-0.0001). Exceptional measurement skill and technique, tool design knowledge, oversees tool fabrication projects, and has remarkably efficient machinist skills (CNC, EDM, grinding, wire, hand work). Champions and applies the company’s continuous improvement fundamentals, Envista Business System, in the scope of work.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Diagnose, repair and build all types of molds, tools and dies. Performs machining operations on tool room machines, using all necessary machine attachments to make replacement parts, tools, and dies.
- Planning of tool making jobs and establishing the best machining method to deliver high quality, high precisions tools.
- Plan work to be performed and determine methods and sequence of operations working from tool design drawings or our own designs.
- Assists in the estimating, planning, and timely completion of assigned work.
- Operates various types of machine shop equipment (manual/CNC) to complete assignment as required. Select cutting tools, holding fixtures, machine feeds and speeds.
- Edit and optimize programs including working with legacy programs to ensure a precise production.
- Advanced programming of CNC equipment such as Vertical Milling Centers, Wire EDM’s, Sinker EDM’s utilizing CAD/CAM systems.
- Works from and interprets blueprints and 3D models to create or modify, molds, dies, tools and fixtures.
- Ability to investigate tooling problems and bench test new tools for proper fitting, clearances, and tolerances.
- Must possess good technical judgment and able to set logical action plans for tool trouble shooting and risk mitigation.
- Records data required to accurately track mold and die maintenance activity.
- Work with maintenance/facilities and vendors on the installation, repair, and maintenance of toolroom equipment.
- Conduct experiments to validate machine repeatability.
- Identify key areas of improvement in our system and communicate these effectively to management, including identifying and recommending equipment for toolroom.
- Regular reporting of progress to the management team, both verbally and through written reports.
- Maintains the work area through good housekeeping and safety practice in accordance to 5S standards.
- Consistently challenge oneself to improve on process and efficiency.
- Able to work with minimal supervision.
- Mentor and develop junior tool makers while ensuring quality of jobs executed by junior tool makers.
- Any duties or projects assigned by Manager.
Job Requirements:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- AA / Technical degree, technical apprenticeship, or 15+ years’ experience in a technical tool making role in an injection molding manufacturing environment.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience programming Wire and Sinker EDM and post processors, working knowledge of CAM software required.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience setting up and operating Wire and Sinker machines to hold tolerances of +/-0.0001 in a medical environment for mold, dies, and fixtures.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks required.
- Fundamental understanding GD&T tolerances and dimensions for high precision medical devices.
- Experience working with various alloys and fabrication method.
- Familiar with Lean techniques to streamline and improve machine shop job flow.
- Ability to resolve practical problems associated with injection mold components, fixtures and support equipment.
LANUGUAGE SKILLS:
- Excellent communications skills, both written and oral are required.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, and operating procedures. Must have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. The ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization is required.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have complete knowledge and practical use of Microsoft office applications.
- Competent with use of personal computers and related software is desirable, knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook, is required.
- Must possess excellent Communication (Technical, Oral, Written).
- Must possess excellent technical judgment and able to set logical action plan and technical problem resolution.
Math Ability:
- Ability to add, subtracts, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate rates, ration and percent to draw and interpret graphs.
- Ability to compute and interpret trigonometry in a tool making environment.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Target Market Salary Range:
Actual compensation packages take into account a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to geographic location; skill sets; relevant education and certifications; depth of experience; performance; and other business and organizational needs. The total compensation package for this position may also include an annual performance bonus, medical/dental/vision benefits, 401K match, and/or other applicable compensation plans.
